Unplugged Ceremonies: Should you do this at your Wedding?

Scenario 1: Your wedding planner (aka, me 🀍) just fluffed out your wedding dress train, and you start to walk down the aisle. As you round the corner, you see all of your guests beautiful….. phone cases. As you get to the end of the aisle, you finally get to stand next to your forever partner. You look out to the crowd and get to see all of your gorgeous guests…… you guessed it, phone cases.

Scenario 2: Your wedding planner (again, me🀍), has put up a “This is an Unplugged Ceremony” sign just before guests arrive, so they know before they are seated that the couple would not like phones out at any point of the ceremony. Guests are seated, I fluff out your dress before you start walking down the aisle, and you finally turn the corner to see your guests beautiful….. FACES!

So, which scenario are you choosing??

What is an Unplugged Ceremony?

An unplugged ceremony asks guests to put away their phones, cameras, and devices (just for the ceremony), so that everyone can be fully present during one of the most important moments of the day. And no, it is not rude of you to ask!

It is perfectly okay for the couple to kindly ask their guests to refrain from taking photos or videos during the ceremony. Instead, they’re invited to simply be there and be present – instead, they are actively watching, listening, and experiencing the moment alongside you!

Of course, this doesn’t mean no photos of your ceremony at all – that is what you hired your photographer and videographer for!! Trust them that they will capture the moment perfectly. Plus, in “scenario 2”, guests faces will be in your professional photos, not their phone cases πŸ˜‰

Why Unplugged Ceremonies are Trending

More Presence, Less Distraction

Couples want their ceremony to feel emotional and intimate. Phones will often pull attention away from the vows, the hand-picked music, and the quiet moments that matter most. And trust us, there is always that one person who forgets to silence their ringer!

Better Professional Photos

Nothing distracts from ceremony photos quite like a glowing screen, or phone flashes, or guests stepping into the aisle for “the shot”. I bet whatever shot the photographer is going to get is a lot better quality than your aunt’s iPhone 11! Having an unplugged ceremony ensure your photographer captures clean, timeless images without distractions.

Less Stress for the Couple

Many couples feel pressure knowing that guests are taking photos and filming every moment from different angles. Let’s be real, we all think we have a “bad side”, and some of us don’t necessarily love having our photos taken on a normal day. So let the professionals do what they do best! Going unplugged removes that pressure, and lets you focus on what really matters – you and your future forever!

A More Meaningful Guest Experience

I feel like 2026 couples are leaning more towards the intimate-feeling wedding, and want their guests to remember the experience they had that night. Guests often say unplugged ceremonies feel more memorable and emotional, which is exactly what couples are wanting right now. Without devices, they are more engaged, therefore more likely to remember how the moment felt, not just how it looked on a screen. “Refreshing” is the best way to describe it!

How to Tell Guests (Without Making it Awkward)

The key to a successful unplugged ceremony is clear, kind communication. Here are a few easy ways to spread the message to your guests:

  • add a note to your wedding website
  • include wording on your ceremony programs
  • use tasteful signage at the ceremony entrance
  • have your officiant make a gentle announcement before the ceremony (this is the most effective)

Honestly, I would do all of these options together! It is also helpful to word your unplugged ceremony as an invitation (not a rule), making guests more receptive. You could say something like: “We invite you to be fully present with us during our ceremony, and ask that all devices be turned off and put away” or “We would love for you to enjoy this moment with us, and kindly ask that you store your phones and devices away during our ceremony” – something along those lines!

Is an Unplugged Ceremony Right for You?

After reading up on what unplugged ceremonies are all about, how do you know if it is right for you? An unplugged ceremony might be perfect if:

  • you value intimate, emotional moments
  • you want clean, distraction-free photos
  • you prefer guests to experience the ceremony, not record it

If the idea of doing an unplugged ceremony brings you peace instead of anxiety, it is probably the right choice for you!

Unplugged ceremonies are not about control – they are about connection! They create space for emotion, presence, and memories that last longer than a social media post.

If you are dreaming of a ceremony that feels authentic, calm, and deeply meaningful, going unplugged might just be one of the best decisions you make!
