If you’ve been on Pintrest or Instagram lately, you’ve probably noticed a trend going around right now called ‘micro wedding’- but what the heck does this mean?
A micro wedding is the intimate, meaningful, and totally charming alternative to the traditional big wedding day. I find that couples are moving away from those big, flashy, grand-ballroom type weddings, and instead going for more of the cozy, minimalist style.
Now, there is nothing wrong with the more “traditional” style of wedding what-so-ever! I’ve just noticed a shift in the last few years of couple gravitating more towards this type of wedding.
With that said, let’s dive into what exactly a micro wedding is, and why couples are falling in love with them!
What is a micro wedding?
A micro wedding is a small, intentional celebration, typically with 30-75 guests. It includes all the beautiful elements of a traditional wedding – vows, florals, photography, cake, personal touches, etc. – just on a much more intimate scale.
When I think of a ‘micro wedding’, I think:
- cozy ceremony in a garden or backyard
- candlelit dinner with your closest peeps
- being able to visit with everyone on your guest list without feeling rushed
- thoughtful details that feel very “you”
- meals served family-style, passed around the table
- a unique dessert served, instead of costco cupcakes!
Now, a micro wedding is different than an elopement (which are usually just the couple + the officiant), but it’s not a full-scale wedding either. It’s that sweet spot in between!
Why micro weddings are trending right now
Micro weddings didn’t just appear out of nowhere – they are a reflection of how couples are rethinking what truly matters. Here’s why they are having such a moment:
More Meaning, Less Pressure
Having a smaller guests lists means less stress, fewer expectations, and more room to actually enjoy your big day. You get to spend real time with all of your attendees, without feeling like you are cutting your conversations short or feeling rushed from person to person.
Budget Flexibility
With fewer guests, couples can invest in other areas that matter most to them . They would have more wiggle room to splurge on their catering, or their dream DJ or photographer, or even the dress that might have previously been considered out of their budget. With a micro wedding, it’s less about cutting corners, and more about spending intentionally.

Micro weddings allow couples to break free from tradition and design their day in a way that feel authentic to them. Handwritten vows, unique venues, non-traditional timelines – everything feels more heartfelt and less like a production.’
